On the morning of June 3, FPNU held a seminar on the development of food disciplines in the academic lecture hall of the library in Wumashan Campus. Prof. Chen Jian, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, director of Academic Committee of Jiangnan University (thereafter referred to as JNU), doctoral supervisor and former president of JNU, was invited to visit the university. President Wu Keshou warmly welcomed Prof. Chen and his delegation on behalf of the university. Li Zhaofeng, Changjiang Distinguished Professor and Director of Academic Affairs Office of JNU, Cheng Li, Vice Dean of School of Food of JNU, and Wang Chao, Deputy Director of Future Food Science Center attended the conference, which was presided over by Vice President Jiang Xingshan. The head of Development Planning Office and Scientific Research Office, the administrator and the head of scientific research work of each secondary entity college, the party and government group members and all full-time teachers of the School of Food and Bioengineering, all the staff of the Scientific Research Office, and the principal of the Joint Degree Program attended the meeting.
Academician Chen Jian highly recognized the idea of focusing on the food industry and creating a “food +” discipline development layout, and fully affirmed the achievements of the development of the food discipline. Combining the current situation and future trend of China’s food industry, he guided the development of the discipline and said that the development potential of China’s food industry is huge, and the advance of the discipline has a great prospect. Characterized by regional, national and advanced features, the development of food science plays an essential role in promoting rural revitalization and building a healthy China. We should adopt a “Greater Food” approach, set our feet on resource advantages, rely on industrial advantages, give full play to the traditional advantages of the discipline, and grasp its development trend. Taking the spirit of being creative, excellent and unique as an important guide for the university to master the discipline advance direction, adhering to the differentiated development, and grasping the development priorities of the food discipline, making a more precise orientation. He pointed out that to promote the growth of the discipline, we should deal with several key issues. That is, we should lay emphasis on the ideological cultivation of teachers, stick to the goal-oriented, cohesive development of consensus, educate and guide the majority of teachers to unify their thinking to the decision-making and deployment of the development of the school disciplines, so as to realize unity of pace and direction. We should speed up the construction of degree programs, strive for the early approval of master’s degree granting units, improve the level of discipline development, and create predominant disciplines. Moreover, a good and strong innovation platform should be built and its role in attracting talents, coordinating resources and enhancing scientific research should be played effectively. Basing ourselves on Fujian and look at the whole country, we should constantly improve the ability of the discipline in supporting the national strategy and leading the economic and social development of the region.
At the meeting, the responsibles from the Development Planning Office, Food and Biological Engineering School reported the relevant situation of the school discipline development planning and food discipline development. Experts from JNU introduced the development of food disciplines in their university and gave guidance on the development of food disciplines in FPNU from the aspects of strengthening the elements of talents, promoting the intersection of disciplines, enhancing the construction of teams and deepening the integration of industry and education.
President Wu Keshou expressed his gratitude to Academician Chen Jian and relevant experts from JNU for their keen perspectives and insights on the development of food discipline in our university. He pointed out that boosting the development of food discipline is of great significance for persevering in first-rate characteristics, creating a disciplinary highland, accelerating the construction of degree programs, and driving the overall disciplinary development of the university. We should closely follow the national development strategy and regional economic and social growth and combine with the present of the university to further reinforce the thinking on the development direction of food discipline, leading the development of disciplines and creating its characteristics. He emphasized that the relevant secondary schools should take an overall consideration, adopt the “Greater Food” approach, incent the organizationality of the disciplinary development, unify thoughts and actions for the school’s decision-making and deployment. According to different disciplinary characteristics, there should be an intensive interaction and cooperation over supporting and promoting the development of food disciplines to achieve common development and accelerate the construction of high-level technical normal colleges with distinctive characteristics.
